Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQ)

Why did you create this site?
I noticed there was a lack of centralized information pertaining to long distance cycling in New England. This site was built to fill that gap.

Who are you?
I'm just a guy who likes to spend a Sunday riding long distance and enjoying the local scenery. You can get to know me better by going to my information page.

I want to organize a ride, where do I start?
First contact you local cycling club, they will have experience in running rides in your area. Next check out my page on ride organizing.

I've done a ton of Century rides, I want to go further, where can I get information on Double Centuries?
Good for you! Check out my page on going beyond 100 miles. Also to my links to ultra marathon cycling. There you will find a number of calendars to Double Centuries outside New England.

I'm from outside New England, where can I get information about lodging/camping?
I will not be providing tourist information on this site, but some of the ride website's do provide lodging info. My advice would be to see your local travel agent, or to surf the web.

I'm interested in buying a recumbent bike, where can I buy one?
There are many good sites on the internet that sell recumbent bikes, but you should ride one first. Try to find a local bike shop that sells recumbents. Contact recumbent clubs and cyclist in your area. They are usually very friendly and can give you tons of information, and may even arrange for you to try their bikes.

Is this a recumbent site?
No, this site was built for all cyclists interested in Ultra Marathon Cycling. I just happen to ride a recumbent.

I want to do a Century ride, where do I start?
First you need to get in shape. Check out my training page for complete information on getting prepared to do a Century ride. Second you need to choose a Century ride. Go to the CRANE Calendar page to see a number of rides available in NE.

Where did you get the rating system?
I made it up. I took all the things that make up a Century ride, divided them up logically and came up with the categories that you see. Go to my rating system page for more details.

Can I rate a Century Ride?
Yes, on the calendar page each ride has a link to a site where you can add your comments about the ride. NOTE: All comments added to those pages will be monitored and will be removed if it is determined that the comments were not appropriate.

I had a really bad experience on one Century ride, should I add it to the comments?
Not unless it was directly caused by a ride organizer's ineptness. Most problems that riders' experience on the road is out of the control of the ride organizer. This site was built to give riders and organizers constructive feedback.

I disagree with your rating of a ride, how can I change it?
You can't, but you can add your comments about any specific ride by going to the calendar page and clicking on the comment link.  If your the ride organizer, you can invite me to do your ride again.  I just asked that you wave the registration and pledge requirements.

What makes you such an expert on NE Century rides?
Well I've lived NE all my life. I have ridden in more than 10 Century rides throughout New England. I don't consider myself an expert, and I may be wrong on some of my ratings, but my hope is to provide ride organizers with constructive feedback that can help improve their rides.

Where did you get the information that you provide on this website?
From experience, surfing the web, and sending emails to a number of Century ride organizers.

Why is my ride not on your site?
Either the ride does not have a Century ride (at least 100 miles), or it does not have a Website, or I just don't know about it. Please send me an with your ride information and I will screen it to see if it should be added to my calendar.

What is your favorite NE Century ride?
The Cadillac Mountain Challenge, the scenery there is just spectacular!

What Century ride did you like the least?
There was only one ride that I did not enjoy, and that is because it rained. I usually will not ride in the rain, but I was hoping I could get most, if not all, of the ride done before the rain started. Unfortunately the forecasters were wrong, and it started to rain 1 hour into the ride. That was not the fault of the ride organizers. Other than that all the rides I have participated in were fun and scenic.
